Hi, this is Allison Sheridan of the NosillaCast Apple Podcast, hosted at Podfeet.com, a technology geek podcast with an EVER so slight Apple bias. Today is Sunday, January 20, 2019, and this is show number 715. We’ve got a big show ready for today. We’ve got interviews from CES with Ampere about a really cool charger, a dash cam from Owl Camera, a long interview with the CEO of one of our favorite companies, OWC, and a nifty alarm clock company you’ve heard about before called Sandman. We’ve also got an interview about Mycroft AI, an open source digital assistant followed by my story of how I actually made my own Mycroft AI. Lots of fun to be had.

Now I forgot to say something really important last week about the CES interviews you’ll be hearing over the coming weeks. Every single one of these is also a video interview. Steve has been working his little editing fingers to the bone producing the videos as blog posts so you can see the products demonstrated. He not only produces the videos and write the blog posts with all the links, he also exports the audio files you here on the podcast. I want to thank him yet again for all the work he does here for these videos. You can find them on podfeet.com by clicking on Videos in the main screen, they’re listed amongst the blog posts and I put the links to his blog posts in the relevant post for the NosillaCast. Go watch them, they’re awesome!

Chit Chat Across the Pond

There wasn’t a Chit Chat Across the Pond this week, but it wasn’t actually intentional. I got confused because Bart and I did the last episode on Sunday so I thought I already did one. Good news though, I’ve booked a guest for next week and we’ve got a Bart episode next week so it all balances out!

Blog Posts

Let’s start off with a company called Sandman. I gush a lot during this interview because the gentleman we’re interviewing gave us a review unit years ago and it’s Steve’s all time, favorite alarm clock. We even did a review of it here: Sandman – the Perfect Bedside Clock from Palo Alto Innovations.

Now sit back and enjoy my conversation with Other World Computing. I was having so much fun in this interview that Steve actually gave me the hook at the end. If he hadn’t I would probably still be talking.

CES 2019: OWC Docks, Drives, and Dongles

Amazon

I’m having so much fun now when I review products, like the upcoming Raspberry Pi conversation and I know I can put in Amazon Affiliate Links to help you more easily find these products. It’s fun because now if you’re in the UK, Germany, Canada, you too can use these links and be immediately taken to your country’s Amazon Store. No faffing about to find the product and if you do purchase the product, a small percentage of your purchase goes to help the podcast, and it doesn’t cost you a dime! I really appreciate everyone who does use these links, it does make a significant difference.

Now let’s hear the interview about that open source digital assistant I mentioned at the beginning.

Installing Open Source Mycroft AI on a Raspberry Pi

And now let’s hear an interview for a product we’ve actually already purchased:

CES 2019: Owl Car Camera

We’ll close out this episode with one of the coolest little gadgets that we saw at CES. I bought one as soon as I got home and I can’t wait till it gets here:

CES 2019: Ampere Unravel Qi Charger

After we were done recording with Ampere, I noticed on their artwork they showed AirPods being charged on the Unravel Qi Charger. I asked Chase about it, thinking that it was misleading because it’s not possible. He explained that they’ve designed a case that the AirPods go into. The case within a case mates with the Lightning connector. Their case then has a Qi charging coil inside it. Isn’t that brilliant? Sure your AirPods case will be slightly larger, but maybe it wouldn’t be so easy to lose. I looked on the Ampere website and didn’t see any mention of it so I plan on reaching out to Chase and asking him when it might be available.
