Hi, this is Allison Sheridan of the NosillaCast Apple Podcast, hosted at Podfeet.com, a technology geek podcast with an EVER so slight Apple bias. Today is Sunday, August 16, 2020, and this is show number 797. It is really super hot in California right now so I may start talking really fast to get this recording done before I boil. It’s 85F in my studio and 87F in Steve’s right as we’re firing up all of the processing power we can to get the live show going. Can’t wait to see how hot it is by the time we finish! If you hear road-noise, birds, squirrels, or skateboarders, that’s because I’m recording with my window open so I don’t expire!
Chit Chat Across the Pond
This week’s Chit Chat Across the Pond was an episode of Taming the Terminal where Bart taught us even more about the Terminal command TMUX. He finished up his three-part miniseries by first teaching us to string commands together to create a TMUX session just the way we like it. He showed us how to, in one command, open a session with the windows and panes split the way we wanted them, with the commands running in the panes we wanted, and even with the prompt waiting for us in the pane we wanted. While learning to string all these commands together was cool, he then showed us how to quickly make this long command into a shell script that we can run at any time and not worry our pretty little heads about remembering the commands.
If you’d like to listen to this episode, there are a lot of ways to do it. You can subscribe to the Taming the Terminal podcast in your podcatcher of choice, or you can pick it up in the Chit Chat Across the Pond feed in your podcatcher. Or you can simply download the Taming the Terminal book in the format of your choice at https://podfeet.com/tttbook.
Or you can simply listen over at CCATP #650 – Bart Busschots on Taming the Terminal 40 – Automating TMUX
Putting this episode out was a pretty interesting challenge now that it IS a book. As you learned in last week’s Chit Chat Across the Pond, Dr. Helma van der Linden automated the process of the book creation. But for me to push out the podcast episode into the feed, the web presence of Taming the Terminal instalment 40 has to exist first. But Helma can’t make the web presence exist till the audio file exists up on archive.org. But the Taming the Terminal audio doesn’t exist until I finish the Chit Chat Across the Pond version of the audio (they have different intros and outtros). And Steve creates the Taming the Terminal audio and puts it up on archive.org. I have to say I nearly lost what’s left of my marbles trying to even figure out what logo went where!
The shownotes for this episode are no longer a blog post either. Each chapter in the book is actually an anchor link within a single, very long HTML file. That sounds dreadful but it works beautifully because the chapter links are in the left sidebar making it easy to jump between chapters.
Helma created the HTML version of the book for me first so that the podcast feeds could point to it, and then tonight after I go to sleep her automated process will update all of the other versions. I honestly have no idea whether those with the Apple Books version will get a notification or not. If you subscribe to the Github project, I think you get a notification but I don’t have any idea what that would look like either. I guess we’ll find out on Monday.
