NC #887 Airalo eSim, PlexiCam Webcam Mount, FreeCAD, Todoist

Hi, this is Allison Sheridan of the NosillaCast Apple Podcast, hosted at Podfeet.com, a technology geek podcast with an EVER so slight Apple bias. Today is Sunday, May 8, 2022, and this is show number 887.

Is there any gift anyone can give you that’s better than the gift of time? When I put the shout out to the community that I needed help with reviews for this week’s show so I could spend time with my grandkinds last week and this week, Claus Wolf, Jeff Gamet, Kurt Liebezeit, and Jill from the Northwoods all came through for me. They gave me the gift of time, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart for creating this awesome show for you.

Also, Happy Mother’s Day out there to all the great moms out there, including those like Carmen who took care of my kids while they were growing up.

Clockwise #449: It’s Still Working, I’m So Sad

This week I got to be on Clockwise again with Dan Moren and Mikah Sargent and I was thrilled to find out that the fourth player was going to be John Siracusa. If you haven’t yet heard John, he’s one of the three hosts of the awesome Accidental Tech Podcast. I listen to ATP and have always said that if I ever got to meet any of the three of them, I hoped it would be John. He’s quirky and brilliant, and has a super quick wit. On Clockwise we talked about the tech we always travel with, things we hope seem slow in 30 years, Twitter’s new Close Friends feature, and devices we own that we secretly wish would die.

I had a blast doing the show with him, and then afterward asked him if he’d come on Chit Chat Across the Pond and he said yes! I’m starting a list of things to talk to him about, but one thing that we’ll go through for sure is his enthusiast’s explanation of the different display technologies from LCD up through Quantum Dot OLED. I’m super excited to get to talk to him one-on-one and pick his brains. While you wait for that episode to come out, you can look for Clockwise #449 “It’s Still Working, I’m So Sad” at relay.fm/clockwise.

Airalo eSim for US Travel – by Claus Wolf

The price on this is amazing. I use Google Fi which is $10/GB and you paid $3.2/GB. Google Fi has a few advantages: I get multiple data-only cards with this so Steve and I can share the data, and we get one real phone number. At 6GB you stop paying any more, so $60 is the most you pay in a calendar month, but the price on Airalo sure is pretty darned attractive!

How would the QR code have worked if you hadn’t printed it out? Seems like a self-referential problem.

You mentioned your fallback plan for phone calls would have been a phone booth, but I just checked and there are four total phone booths in all of New York!

PlexiCam: The Webcam Mount You Didn’t Know You Need for Your Display – by Jeff Gamet

I’ve got the magnetically mounted Logitech 4K for XDR, and in poking at the PlexiCam site I noticed they’ll even accommodate that option. they sell a little 3M sticky thing to give a 1/4-20 thread to those without it. I’m kind of tempted to try this. Thanks so much for this review, Jeff, it was great!

About 11 years after I started working as a mechanical engineer, the first computer-aided design (CAD) application was brought into our company and I was the first to test it out to see if it could really replace drafting boards. This was the beginning of my one and only intentional career shift when I discovered that I could make the computer sing. For that reason, my heart warms at the review you’re about to hear by Kurt Liebezeit, aka PDX_Kurt in the chat room, of the free parametric modeling program FreeCAD.

FreeCAD Review – by Kurt Liebezeit

That was fantastic, Kurt. I hope to carve out the time to watch some of the intro videos so I can give FreeCAD a successful spin. I tweeted out a link to Kurt’s written article and included @FreeCADNews on distribution. They loved it (as you can imagine) and also included this note:

We’ve improved units of measurement quite a bit in v0.20dev (which is about to be released). We invite you to test the weekly build from github.com/…

So pretty much Kurt’s only complaint is already being improved upon. Thanks, Kurt for sending this in!

Support the Show

One of the best things about Patreon is that it’s just as easy to stop pledging to a show as it is to start. I don’t want to encourage anyone to leave, but it’s great to know that you can with the click of a button. I make it a point to never track who stops supporting the show. That’s just a road to sadness, right? And I don’t want to make anyone feel guilty or sad for stopping, that’s just not what we’re all about here. But I did want to give a shout-out to Martin who was a supporter for a couple of years, evidently took a break, and then just came back as a patron of the show. He exercised all of the buttons! Thank you Martin for your generous support and welcome back! You can be cool like Martin by going to podfeet.com/patreon, or just push the link in your podcatcher for this chapter!
