This week’s live show is an adventure. Steve and I have been doing the live show for a very long time, but for most of that time, I actually ran the live show. It was an awful lot of work to set up and control all while also trying to produce a podcast. We used to use Google Hangouts on Air, and while you could see me, Steve and Discord, my laptop was doing the ingesting of video and audio and pushing that out onto the web.
Steve had this fancy 27″ iMac that had much more power than my MacBook Pro but Google Hangouts on Air wouldn’t let us push some of this work over to his machine. In April 2018, we started using the video switching/streaming software mimoLive from Boinx. It’s a very complex piece of software but it’s highly capable and configurable, and most importantly Steve can run the live show from his computer, freeing me up to be the “on-air talent”.
That’s been great for the last four and a half years, but what happens if Steve decides to go camping and leaves me alone at home on a Sunday night? We could have bailed on the live show, but instead, I’m wearing both hats – producer/switcher and on-air talent. I’ve got both of our 14″ M1 Max MacBook Pros on my desk right now. With mimoLive on my Mac, it’s ingesting my mic’s and video of me, along with video and audio from my recording software Hindenburg.
Steve’s MacBook Pro takes all of those audio and video streams into mimoLive sets them up in the video/audio switcher and then broadcasts to YouTube Live. We ran a couple of test sessions, and I created a 19-page guide using Folge on how to run his Mac and with any luck, it’s working as you hear this.
