I’m Still Using It
Last week I told you about a fun new audience participation game I’m calling “I’m still using it”. The idea is for you to write a paragraph or two about some technology (hardware or software) that has really lasted the test of time. I’ve gotten quite a few really fun entries already, and I’d love to get even more.
If you keep it to a couple of paragraphs, I’ll just read it for you. If it turns into a longer story, it might be better if you recorded the audio yourself. It sounds funny when I talk too long in someone else’s voice. For the short ones, you’re more than welcome to record them, but you don’t have to.
My idea is that this content will give us interesting content for Thanksgiving week and Christmas week so I can take a little bit of a break to relax.

A thought with regards Nosillacast #909 and your chat about phishing the elderly…. With my professional consultant’s hat on I have a significant number of clients over 70 years old and the main IT advice I give them (and their families) to help both cope with, and protect from, diminished cognition is to move to using only an iPad. It has a downside of no ability for me to remote connect when giving support but conversely that is a big upside for preventing scammers taking control.
As an example: I was recently visiting my mother-in-law and noticed her old PC laptop was in the living room. I had moved her to an iPad about 4 years ago so I asked her why the PC was out and she replied that it was the only way she could interact with “the people trying to get my money back”. Closer inspection of the PC showed they had gotten her to install AnyDesk but luckily they hadn’t gotten further.
Of course, there are other ways in which an iPad is great for older folks who are non-tech literate, but to my mind, this security aspect alone justifies the purchase.
I hope this idea helps others navigate the tricky subject of implementing “inverse parental controls”.

Ron Burch and Allison Talk iPhone 14 Pro Cameras (no blog post)
In this segment, we talk about how there are 3 lenses on the back of the iPhone 14 Pro and yet there are 4 cameras (Ultra-wide, Wide/Main, 2X Telephoto, and 3X Telephoto). We talk about how the sensors are divided up between the lenses, and what it means to have the 2X camera use the middle 12 MP of a 48MP sensor, and yet it’s not a digital zoom. Ron also answers the question of why the main camera combines 48MP into 12MP instead of just having pixels that are 4X as big. It gets into materials science which is always fun.
