Hi this is Allison Sheridan of the NosillaCast Mac Podcast, hosted at Podfeet.com, a technology geek podcast with an EVER so slight Macintosh bias. Today is Sunday June 15, 2014 and this is show number 474. I haven’t been nearly as busy with other podcasts this week as I was last, but I did get to be on the Pocket Show again, hosted by Paul Wheatley of the British Tech Network. He also had my good buddy Chris Ashley from SMR Podcast on to represent Windows, and James Hart bringing in the Android angle. These are great guys and it’s all good fun while we talk about the advances in the three OSs and have some giggles along the way, like when Paul tries to pronounce “Yosemite”. You guys would love it.
I want to give a shout out to a Kick Starter campaign for the WHILL Personal Mobility Device. You might remember Steve and I interviewed Chris Koyama at the CSUN Persons With Disabilities Expo last year. In the video youc an see how cool this device is to increase mobility for those with impairments so that they can go on rugged terrain and even be more effective in confined spaces because this thing spins right in place. The video over on Kickstarter really shows how cool this is. They’re already nearly halfway to their $30K goal, so go check it out at the link in the shownotes, or go to kickstarter.com and search for WHILL.
I’m super excited about Chit Chat Across the Pond this week, Greg Scown of Smile Software agreed to come on the show and talk about what might be possible in iOS 8 for applications like TextExpander. You’ll really like to hear what he has to say.

Clarify
Sometimes I like jumping into the Wayback Machine and looking at all of the tutorials I’ve created with Clarify and its predecessor ScreenSteps Desktop. It’s really an astonishing library of information I’ve dumped out of my brain so I don’t have to remember it any more myself. One of the most visited tutorials on podfeet.com is actually How to set up FTP to connect to WordPress using Cyberduck. I think I wrote this in 2009 and I’m STILL getting hits on it.
I created this tutorial for my friend Nancy all those years ago so she could learn how to put new themes on her new WordPress installation using the free Cyberduck. I really feel good when I can help people, and one of the ways I do that is making these tutorials with Clarify. I also really don’t remember how to do a lot of stuff, so many of these tutorials are to help me remember! If you know stuff, and you have friends and family who need to know the stuff you know, and you don’t want to tell them 12 times, check out the free beta of Clarify 2 over at clarify-it.com and see how easy and fun it is to help other people.
Chit Chat Across the Pond
This week we welcome Greg Scown, founder (along with Philip Goward) of Smile Software to talk to us about what the new changes to iOS might bring to enhanced capabilities of applications like TextExpander.
0. Updated Developer Agreement
1. Overview of TextExpander
– What is it?
– Why is it useful?
2. Current Limitations of TextExpander on iOS
3. TextExpander touch SDK and apps which implement it (including Drafts, Fantastical 2, Launch Center Pro, OmniOutliner, etc.)
4. What are the options for TextExpander in iOS 8?
– Custom Keyboard
– Share Extension
5. Stay Tuned
The challenge is that #4 is really just a few sentences of description about what a custom keyboard is, what a share extension is, and a statement that we believe some combination of the two could possibly make TextExpander available more broadly in iOS 8. I fear it might feel a bit thin, but then again it might help for your audience to hear that we’re excited, that we believe there’s potential, and that we don’t feel as though we’ll have to try to convince developers one at a time to add TextExpander touch support to their apps.
